Lal Quila

About Lal Quila
Built in a little over 9 years, Shah Jahan entered his new city on 19 April 1648, amidst jubilant celebrations lasting 10 days. Since then, until the rising of 1857, the fort was a mini city, with palaces, offices, workshops and halls of audience. After the mutiny, in 1858, a large number of palaces in the fort were demolished and taikhanas (basement rooms) locked and barred. Open daily, sunrise to sunset, except August 15, The Red Fort, used to have two arched gateways.
